Luton Town picked up a big result in the Championship survival race as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Cardiff City.
Cardiff had taken the lead through Calum Chambers just after half-time, but Jordan Clark equalised less than ten minutes later before Thelo Aasgaard’s goal in the final ten minutes won the day for the Hatters.
The result was Matt Bloomfield’s first away win as Luton manager, and the Hatters’ first victory on their travels since winning at Millwall back in mid-September.
The Bedfordshire club remain in the relegation zone despite the win, but they are now just two points behind Cardiff and being out of the bottom three as a consequence of their win in Wales.
After a gruelling defeat at promotion chasing Burnley at the weekend, Luton’s trip to Cardiff City represented a big clash with the duo being two of the division’s bottom four at kick-off.
Neither side entered in sparkling form, with hosts Cardiff on a run of one win in seven games and Luton on a run of just one win in 14 outings.
A tight first half saw opportunities at a premium, with only one shot on target in the half. That one was nearly an opener, however, with former Luton keeper Ethan Horvath making a decent save to deny Liam Walsh’s strike after the ball fell to the midfielder on the edge of the box.
Cardiff would however score first, with the Bluebirds scoring in the 50th minute. Alex Robertson’s free-kick was only partially cleared and the ball fell for Chambers, whose half volley wound up in the back of the net to give the hosts the lead.
Carlton Morris was denied by Horvath just after the Cardiff opener, but the away side persisted and found an equaliser seven minutes after falling behind.
Clark picked up a clearance a few yards outside the Cardiff penalty area and the midfielder was able to make space to volley a crisp strike that flew into the back of the net and bring Luton level.
The game duly opened up, with both sides needing a win and creating more opportunities. Cardiff sub Sivert Mannsverk fired off target when well placed, before Luton sub Millenic Alli hit the side-netting.
Cardiff then had two opportunities to move in front when first Thomas Kaminski made a good stop to thwart Perry Ng and then goalscorer Chambers hit a firm strike that beat the Luton keeper only to hit the crossbar.
Less than a minute after Chambers hit the bar, the game was turned in Luton’s favour as they took the lead in the 80th minute.
A low cross-shot by Luton sub Josh Bowler, who had been at Cardiff last season, was blocked by Dimitrios Goutas, but the Cardiff defender’s intervention inadvertently teed up Aasgaard, and the Norwegian took the chance to score his first Luton goal and put the Hatters in front.
The Hatters were then able to keep Cardiff at bay for the remaining ten minutes and a further five of stoppage time to take a priceless three points.
Luton will be looking to continue momentum as they host Middlesbrough at the weekend in their last game before the upcoming international break.
