Milton Keynes City Council have launched a consultation on a Sustainability Strategy to bolster ambitions to be net zero by 2030.

The City Council is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to have their say on the draft Sustainability Strategy which aims to make MK one of the world’s leading sustainable cities.

The city council’s new strategy describes how the whole city and all council operations could be net zero by 2030, which is 20 years ahead of the legal deadline set by the UK government.

MK City Council said, “This goal – while ambitious – is built on years of progress including the city council cutting carbon emissions by tens of thousands of tonnes and reducing its energy use by 80%. Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park is now generating enough energy to power 11,000 homes and the city council has secured funding to make 1,500 council homes more energy efficient, with some tenants already benefitting from lower energy bills. Over 8,000 trees have been planted in recent years, including ten forest gardens.”

The draft strategy outlines how the city will tackle climate change and reduce emissions, and how the community will benefit as a result. Collaboration is a key part of the strategy; residents and businesses have a vital role to play in making Milton Keynes fully sustainable.

The strategy has five key themes:

  • Economy – Encouraging green jobs, supporting local businesses to seize the opportunities of net zero, and driving a circular economy
  • Energy – Supporting renewable energy use and plans for a city-wide District Heating Network
  • Emissions – Investing in sustainable public transport and decarbonising council vehicles and homes
  • Environment – Protecting and enhancing the city’s green spaces and biodiversity
  • Engagement – Working hand-in-hand with communities

Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking, Cllr Shanika Mahendran, said, “This draft strategy not only gives us the foundations to protect our environment, but also creates real opportunities for everyone in our city. From green jobs and better homes to cleaner transport and healthier communities, this is a plan for the future. The only way we can make a real difference and achieve our sustainability goals is if everyone comes on this journey with us.”

The consultation is live on the MK City Council website.

MK Dons have announced a kit supply deal with Reebok as their replacement for Castore.

The League Two club have announced that the sportswear brand, which was founded in Lancashire but has been based in the USA since the 1980s, will take over the Dons’ kit supply on a multi-year contract.

Reebok’s partnership is part of the firm’s return into football kit supply. The company had previously made kits for a wide variety club but had wound down as an independent supplier following their takeover by sportswear giants Adidas in 2006.

The company has taken on deals to supply kits for clubs in Brazil and Mexico, while they made their return to English football this month by becoming the new kit supplier at Charlton Athletic, who like MK Dons ended a supply deal with Castore at the end of the 2024/25 season.

The Dons had been partnered with Castore since 2022, when the English sportswear brand replaced Errea as kit-makers.

MK Dons will reveal their new kits in the not-too distant future ahead of the 2025/26 season, which starts on the weekend around Saturday August 2nd 2025.

As well as designing and supplying kits and training wear, Reebok will also help to redress and restock the Dons’ club store later this month.

MK Dons’ Chairman Fahad Al Ghanim said in a statement on the club’s official website that he was delighted with the arrangement.

He said, “This is a seismic moment for MK Dons, as we continue to invest in all aspects of the football club, partnering with the right technical partner was crucial.

“We’re delighted to be entering into this strategic partnership with Reebok, an iconic brand with huge global recognition.

“We know from regular feedback just how important producing football shirts of the highest quality is to our supporters, and we’re thrilled to be providing that with a sporting brand that matches our drive and ambition.

“I’d like to thank the team at Reebok, led by John Carden, for their support with this important step forward, as well as the brilliant staff at MK Dons for all their efforts.

“This is such an exciting time for the club and the city as we enter this new era together.”

John Carden, CEO of Reebok’s UK team sports licensee Sports Hub Brands, said, “Milton Keynes Dons have high aspirations for this season, and Reebok share a similar mentality. Together we share and celebrate the excitement surrounding the club and the direction the club is heading under new ownership and leadership. This latest partnership continues to prove that Reebok belong at the heart of UK and European football.”

Milton Keynes City Council have approved proposals to restore the historic Bradwell Windmill, with the intent to bring it back into use as a key heritage and community attraction.

Supported with a £250,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Grade II listed Windmill will undergo essential repairs to fix infrastructure and preserve its historic features.

The project will also improve how the site’s history is shared, making it easier for residents and visitors to learn about its past.

MK City Council said that they will be working alongside residents to develop heritage, learning, training and volunteering activities at the Windmill that will involve expert partners including Milton Keynes Museum, the Living Archive MK and Milton Keynes Arts Centre.

The project will also extend to the nearby ‘Railway Walk’, better connecting the Windmill to other local heritage sites to make it easier to explore the area’s rich industrial and natural history.

A total £470,000 investment, supported by tariff and Section 106 funding from developers alongside external grants will secure the long-term future of the Windmill as a community asset and visitor attraction. Tariff funding is collected from developers to invest into local infrastructure as the city grows.

Once the work is complete, the site will pass to Milton Keynes Museum on a full repairing lease to ensure it remains protected and well cared for as part of the City Museum delivery.

The project started this month and should be complete by late 2026 in time for Milton Keynes’ 60th birthday year in 2027.

Information can be found on the project’s website when it goes live later this week.

Cabinet Member for Planning and Placemaking, Cllr Shanika Mahendran, said, “Protecting and renewing our heritage is vital, not just to remember our past but to build a stronger future for local communities. Restoring Bradwell Windmill will bring a much-loved local landmark back to life, creating opportunities for learning, volunteering and tourism while preserving a unique piece of Milton Keynes’ story.”

Stuart McLeod, Director of England – London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, added, “We are delighted to support Milton Keynes City Council with this important project to restore Bradwell Windmill. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, it not only means that this important heritage is saved for future generations, but that more people will be able to get involved with, protect, and learn about the exciting heritage right on their doorstep.”

A man has been given two life sentences for the murders of Teohna Grant and Jo Pearson on Christmas Day last year in Milton Keynes.

Jazwell Brown, aged 49, of Santa Cruz Avenue, Bletchley, has been sentenced to two life prison sentences, with a minimum of 39 years of imprisonment following a hearing today (17/6) at Luton Crown Court.

In a previous hearing on 15 April at the same court, Brown pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count each of possession of a knife in a public place and causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

On 25 December 2024, Jazwell Brown fatally assaulted his partner, Jo Pearson, 38, at their home in Santa Cruz Avenue by stabbing her repeatedly and beating her with a baseball bat. Having done so, he then attempted to kill a 17-year-old boy by stabbing him and assaulting him with a baseball bat.

Brown then took a knife and the baseball bat to his neighbour’s flat where he stabbed and killed Teohna Grant, 24, and attempted to kill her partner, Bradley Latter, aged 29, stabbing him multiple times.

He also stabbed Jo’s dog, Tilly, before fleeing the scene in his car, driving dangerously at speed without the vehicle’s external lights on, almost hitting officers who tried to stop him, and ignoring traffic signals until officers stopped and arrested him.

Thames Valley Police said that evidence suggests that the murders and attempted murders were wholly unprovoked, committed by Brown while he was under the influence of cocaine.

Brown was arrested the same day and charged two days later.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Brangwin, of the Major Crime Unit, said, “First and foremost, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the families of Jo and Teohna, who tragically died in this shocking incident on Christmas Day.

“The events that unfolded on that day were truly horrific and tragic. We may never know what prompted Brown to behave the way he did. In his own home, he stabbed his partner Jo 31 times, before turning the knife and a baseball bat on a teenage boy. Brown also repeatedly stabbed Jo’s dog, Tilly, who survived despite her injuries.

“What remains even more incomprehensible is why Brown then left his home and tried the front door of a nearby flat, taking the knife and baseball bat with him. It was in this flat that he stabbed Teohna multiple times, causing fatal injuries. Teohna’s partner Bradley was also brutally attacked, sustaining more than 20 injuries to his neck alone. Somehow, Bradley survived.

“The scenes that responding emergency services faced that evening are indescribable. As a credit to their incredible bravery and dedication to protecting the public and saving lives, the outcome could have been even worse were it not for their decisive actions.

“The surviving victims and the families of Teohna and Jo have suffered enormously throughout this process. I would like to thank them for placing their trust in Thames Valley Police and the Crown Prosecution Service, allowing us the time and space to thoroughly investigate and bring Brown to justice.

“Family members have described today’s sentencing as ‘part of the healing journey’. We know there is a long way to go but I hope that after today they can at least start that process.”

Northampton Town have announced the signing of midfielder Michael Jacobs, who returns to the club 13 years after first leaving.

Jacobs, who was born in Northamptonshire and began his career in the Cobblers’ academy, has signed a one year deal to return to Sixfields. He joins the club after leaving Chesterfield at the end of last season.

The midfielder will move on 1st July upon the expiry of his Chesterfield contract. He had spent two seasons with Chesterfield, which included helping the Spireites win promotion from the National League in his first-season and help the Derbyshire club reach the play-offs last season.

Jacobs previously made his first team debut with Northampton in 2009. He made 100 competitive appearances in his first spell at the club, before he left to join Derby County in 2012, where he played regular first team football in the Championship.

In his career, Jacobs has also played for Wolves, Wigan and Portsmouth, as well as enjoying a loan spell with Blackpool.

Northampton boss Kevin Nolan told the club’s official website that he was delighted to bring Jacobs to the club.

He said, “We can’t wait for Michael to join us.

“We think he can be very good for us, not only in his own right but as a player who the other lads in the squad can learn from and we certainly feel they will benefit from his presence and his experience.

“He knows the club and a number of the staff know Michael well and we feel he is a good fit for us.

“We are looking for a balance and a blend within the squad and we are delighted to welcome Michael back to Sixfields.”
