Luton Town are out of the Carabao Cup following a 1-0 defeat away at Coventry City in the First Round.
The Hatters were beaten by the team they beat in the Championship play-off final two years ago, with a second half strike by Ellis Simms winning the game for the Sky Blues.
A Luton side that made 11 changes from their weekend win over Peterborough were unable to get back on level terms, allowing Frank Lampard’s side to progress at their expense.
Matt Bloomfield opted to make a total refresh from the team that won their weekend game, including a debut for teenage academy graduate Christian Chigozie.
Despite the changes, Luton were causing Coventry problems, with Cauley Woodrow flicking one header narrowly wide and another effort denied by home goalkeeper Ben Wilson.
Kai Andrews fired Coventry’s best chance wide, with the teenager also seeing a strike blocked by Tom Holmes.
Coventry would open the scoring just before the hour mark. A run by Raphael Rodrigues released Haji Wright, whose cross found Simms at the back post for a tap-in.
The game’s best chances for a second goal came Coventry’s way, with James Shea denying Jack Rudoni’s free-kick and Simms firing wide when well placed.
Luton sub Jake Richards headed over at the end, but the game was up for Luton, whose Carabao Cup interest is over for another season.
Their attention now returns to the league programme, with Luton’s next assignment seeing them host Bradford City on Saturday.

MK Dons are out of the Carabao Cup after a 2-0 defeat by Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
A goal in each half did the business for the Championship side, with goals by Jason Knight and Yu Hirakawa deciding the contest in favour of the home side.
Both goals were set up by Scott Twine, who was playing against MK Dons for the first time since leaving the club in 2022.
A Dons side that had nine changes from the weekend’s win at Barrow had a few opportunities, but were ultimately powerless against a Robins side who were seeking to build on a sensational opening day victory over Sheffield United.
The hosts took the lead early. In the sixth minute, Twine’s corner found Knight, with the Bristol City captain’s header landing in the back of the Dons’ net.
An early opportunity had fallen the Dons’ way, with Liam Kelly’s blocked shot falling for Will Collar to prod wide.
Collar would then head a further effort wide after being picked out by Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, while at the other end, Rob Dickie would place a header off target.
Bristol City then moved 2-0 up just after the hour mark. Substitute Hirakwa was picked out by Twine, and the Japanese attacker perfectly placed a right-footed strike beyond Connal Trueman.
Substitute Josh Stokes later hit the crossbar with a chance for a third, but the hosts were able to keep MK Dons at bay from making a comeback as they booked their place in the Second Round.
MK Dons now switch their attentions back to their league programme, with their next outing seeing them play Cheltenham Town at home on Saturday.

Northampton Town have re-signed midfielder Terry Taylor on loan from Charlton Athletic.
The 24-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with the Cobblers from Charlton, and Taylor will return to Sixfields on a season-long loan deal.
Taylor had made 19 appearances on loan in the second half of last season, scoring once.
Northampton manager Kevin Nolan told the club’s official website that he was very excited to bring Taylor back to the club.
He said, “We are really pleased to welcome Terry back to the club.
“He needs no introduction from me. The supporters know all about Terry and what he can do and the quality of his performances last season say more than I ever could.
“He was really keen to come back here and that not only says a lot about Terry, but it is a pat on the back for Northampton Town and what we do as a club that a player of Terry’s quality was so keen to return.
“He will form part of a strong midfield unit, and we are looking forward to him rejoining the group.
“Once again, a big thank you to the Board of Directors for their support. Terry’s signing is another step in the right direction for us and I am sure all supporters will be pleased to see him back in a Cobblers shirt.”

Luton Town defender Christ Makosso has been handed with a three game suspension for violent conduct.
The defender had been charged by the FA after being recorded punching Peterborough’s Carl Johnston during an incident in the 76th minute of Saturday’s match at Posh’s Weston Homes Stadium. The two players had been grappling while waiting for a Luton corner to be taken, with the incident happening as the ball was played into the box.
The incident had been missed the on-pitch referee but was registered by a camera behind the goal.
An FA statement read, “Luton Town’s Christ Makosso has been suspended for three matches following an incident in their EFL League One match against Peterborough United on Saturday, 9 August.
“The defender’s behaviour around the 76th minute wasn’t seen by the match officials at the time, but it was caught on camera, and The FA alleged that it constitutes violent conduct.
“Christ Makosso subsequently admitted the charge against him and accepted the standard penalty for violent conduct.”
The suspension is implemented with immediate effect, with Makosso suspended for Luton’s Carabao Cup match against Coventry City tonight (12/08). He will also miss Luton’s upcoming League One fixtures against Bradford and Wigan.

Northampton Town picked up their first point of the new season after a goalless draw at home to Bradford City.
A contest of few opportunities saw both sides ultimately settle for a point in the August sunshine.
The result means Northampton get their first point of the new campaign, as they avoid joining six other teams in starting the new campaign with 2 defeats out of 2.
Kevin Nolan’s side had begun the new season with defeat away at Wigan in their opening match, with their first home assignment of the campaign being against a newly promoted Bradford side who’d marked their return to League One by beating Wycombe in their opener.
A low-quality first half saw most of the chances be Bradford strikes that missed the target, with Stephen Humphrys and Tommy Leigh missing the target from range, while substitute Max Dyche did well to put off Josh Neufville.
Northampton’s best first-half chances saw Sam Hoskins fire off-target before Cameron McGeehan had a header comfortably stopped by one-time Cobblers keeper Sam Tickle.
Perhaps the chance of the game came Bradford’s way just after the break when defender Curtis Tilt hit the post with a header from a Bantams corner.
Antoni Sarcevic then also came close for the Yorkshiremen, with his effort blocked on the line by Cobblers midfielder Dean Campbell.
Hoskins saw a free-kick clear the bar late on, but a game of few opportunities duly petered out and the points would be shared.
Northampton will go again on Tuesday, as Nolan’s side face a Carabao Cup tie against Championship side Southampton.
