MK Dons picked up their first win of the new season as two second half goals saw them beat Barrow 2-0 in Cumbria.

Alex Gilbey and Callum Patterson scored the goals to do the job for the Dons, who picked up their first win of the 2025/26 season.

The result saw the Dons pick up their first win of the new season at the second attempt. Paul Warne’s side have 4 points from their first 2 games of the new campaign, with Warne also yet to see his side concede a goal in competitive action after managing the last 4 games of last season.

MK Dons were missing Aaron Collins, who was absent through injury, but a reshuffled Dons began brightly with the visitors having the bulk of positive play in the first half.

Just after the 20 minute mark, the Dons had a goal disallowed when Rushian Hepburn-Murphy rounded Barrow keeper Wyll Stanway and scored, only for play to be pulled back after the ball was deemed to have gone out of play.

The Dons also lost Kane Thompson-Sommers to injury, but they still nearly struck first when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was denied by a fine stop from Stanway. Gilbey would then fire the rebound off target.

Mendez-Laing would have strikes repelled either side of half-time, while Barrow’s best opportunity came just after the break when Ben Jackson had an effort go close and Joe Tomlinson had to block an effort on the line.

With 17 minutes of the 90 to go, MK Dons then found the game’s opener. Paterson’s knockdown from a cross from the Dons’ left ended up with Gilbey, who was able to shoot while falling and see his effort creep past Stanway to put the visitors in front.

Eight minutes later, the visitors grabbed number two. A counter attack resulted in a strike by Joe Tomlinson that was blocked by a covering home defender, but the loose ball fell for Paterson to strike home his first goal since joining MK Dons from Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month.

MK Dons’ next commitment takes place on Tuesday, when they travel to play Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.
