Northampton Town have announced the signing of defender Joe Wormleighton after his release by Leicester City.
The 21-year-old has signed a two year contract at Sixfields, with the deal making him Northampton’s 10th new signing ahead of the upcoming season.
Wormleighton had been training with Northampton in the summer, with the defender also playing as a trialist in the Cobblers’ opening two pre-season friendlies against Brackley Town and Cambridge United.
The defender was a product of Leicester City’s academy and appeared for the club in the EFL Trophy on six occasions, but was unable to make a first-team appearance for the Foxes.
Northampton manager Kevin Nolan told the Cobblers’ official website that Wormleighton ticked many of the boxes they were looking for as they sought an extra full-back.
He said, “We have had a good look at Joe and Joe has had a good look at us over the last couple of weeks and he has done well.
“We were looking to add another full back to the squad and Joe has a lot of excellent attributes that we are looking for in our full backs.
“He is mobile and he can attack as well as defend, he’s versatile and can play on both the right and the left as well as wing back, he played as a wide player earlier in his career and we have seen how well he has settled in over the last few weeks both on and off the field.
“Joe also has a great attitude and a willingness to learn and we are looking forward to having him as part of the squad.”
