Luton Town picked up a point towards their Championship survival efforts as they drew 1-1 with promotion chasing Leeds United.
Isaiah Jones’ first Luton goal gave the Hatters a first half lead that the visitors cancelled out through Dan James.
But a battling performance by Matt Bloomfield’s side saw them collect a point from a difficult assignment against a Leeds side that remain in automatic promotion contention despite an iffy run of one win from six games.
A point means Luton are now unbeaten in four games, and with six games of the season to go, they are two points from safety.
Off the back of victory over fellow strugglers Hull City last time out, Luton faced a different challenge in the form of Leeds, who find themselves in a three-team fight for automatic promotion with Burnley and Sheffield United.
Leeds had begun brightly, with Thomas Kaminski making an early save to keep out James’ header and a better one a few minutes later after Junior Firpo had deflected Manor Solomon’s free-kick goalwards.
But with 15 minutes on the clock, it was Luton that found a breakthrough. Elijah Adebayo won possession just inside the Luton half and fed Jordan Clark down the home side’s left flank.
Clark picked out an unmarked Jones waiting at the back post, and the right wing-back duly volleyed past Karl Darlow to grab his first Luton goal.
Luton would hold their lead for 13 minutes until Leeds found a way through to equalise. A corner was cleared out to James, and the Welsh international was able to evade Adebayo before firing a fine strike into the top corner.
The remainder of the first half saw very few opportunities created, while Luton sustained a blow as Adebayo was forced off injured just after half-time.
The hosts did come close after the enforced change, however, with Darlow making a big stop to deny Thelo Aasgaard and Clark firing the rebound into the stands.
Kaminski made a late stop to thwart Patrick Bamford before Solomon fired wide after being found by James.
Luton were nevertheless content to take a point to make it four games unbeaten ahead of a big relegation six pointer away at Stoke City on Tuesday night.
