
Milton Keynes Market has closed and will remain closed until further notice after a fire broke out in a stall.
Fire broke out in a stall at the market at around 7:30pm yesterday (10/12), with the local fire department confirming multiple crews from the city and other local stations attended the blaze.
Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue confirmed eleven appliances and crews attended, comprising three from Aylesbury, two from West Ashland, and one apiece from Broughton, Newport Pagnell, Buckingham, Winslow, Waddesdon and Marlow. In total, around 40 firefighters are said to have attended the site.
Thames Valley Police also implemented road closures to cordon off the area, located near to the centre:mk shopping centre in the city centre.
Firefighters were called to extinguish a fire that began in a single storey outdoor building. The area has been described as approximately 20m x 20m.
Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that firefighters carried out a reinspection on the morning of 11th December, but no hotspots were found.
An investigation has now begun to figure out why the blaze broke out.
In a statement on social media, Milton Keynes Market voiced their sadness at the blaze that has closed the site and confirmed it will be closed as a whole until further notice.
The market said, “We are deeply saddened to announce that a fire broke out at Milton Keynes Market last night. Emergency services were called to the scene and worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control.
“We are still assessing the extent of the damage, but the market will be closed until further notice.
“This is a devastating blow to our market traders, especially during the busy Christmas period. We ask for your understanding and consideration during this difficult time, as businesses have been affected.
“We will provide updates as soon as we have more information.”
Road closures are in place in some areas of Milton Keynes city centre around the affected area while damage is assessed.
Some parts of Lower 9th Street, Lower 10th Street, Secklow Gate and Midsummer Boulevard in the city centre are closed as per an update by Milton Keynes City Council this morning.
Bus operator Arriva have confirmed services are also affected with stops immediately by the centre:mk inaccessible due to the road closures.
Arriva have stated that with the Point and the Theatre District stops inaccessible, the nearest stops will be CBX on Midsummer Boulevard and Campbell Park for all services. This will also include passengers using the X1, X4, X6 and 33 services as well as local routes in the city.
