Red Bull were beaten by McLaren at the Dutch Grand Prix as Max Verstappen was beaten by Lando Norris.

At his home race, Verstappen had passed the McLaren of Norris off the line but was overtaken by the British driver later in the race then was unable to keep up as Norris won by a margin of over 22 seconds.

Verstappen was duly forced to settle for second pace while his team-mate Sergio Perez crossed the line in 6th position.

The result meant that Verstappen failed to win at Zandvoort for the first time since the Dutch Grand Prix returned to the F1 calendar in 2021, while Red Bull have now failed to win in each of the last five Formula One races.

Red Bull remain with the advantage in both championships but saw their lead in both cut into as a result. Verstappen leads the Driver’s Championship with 295 points, with a win and fastest lap for Norris seeing the McLaren cut his lead to 70 points. Team-mate Perez, meanwhile, sits seventh, with the Mexican driver now 15 points behind Lewis Hamilton and 17 ahead of George Russell.

As for the Constructor’s Championship, the Milton Keynes-based Red Bull Racing team remain in the lead of the field. However, with McLaren scoring more than Red Bull, it meant that the team’s lead over McLaren has been cut to 30 points.

Verstappen was making his 200th Formula One start and in his pursuit of getting back to winning ways, he had initially made a quick start when he beat Norris off the line and took the lead into turn one. Team-mate Perez, meanwhile, lost a place off the line to the faster starting Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

Initially, Verstappen held the lead and got out of DRS, but as the first stint of the tyres wore on, Verstappen was struggling to shake off the McLaren.

Norris duly closed up and at the start of lap 18, the McLaren made a move, flying past Verstappen into turn one to take lead of the race.

Verstappen attempted to make an undercut to get back past Norris, but the McLaren kept track position when Norris pitted and he duly got away, escalated to a huge lead over the field to win comfortably.

As for Perez, he rejoined ninth after his stop behind a few early-stopping midfielders but was able to get back into sixth.

Perez would lose a position when he was passed by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, but gained one when George Russell made a second pit-stop and was unable to catch up to try to re-pass the Mexican later in the race, allowing Perez to pick up 6th – his highest finish since taking fourth in Miami back in May.

Red Bull will seek to try again to get a win when Formula One heads to Italy for the next round at Monza.
